Assignment 1 : The Torus

Image
Process /  The Torus could be made in a number of different ways with the use of timber patterns, rollers, stretchers and poles. I decided to shape the aluminium sheet by forming it to the metal pole, from there with a semi closed cylinder, the stretcher was used to elongate the edges which in turn started to create a convex curve. The piece was then hammered along the edges to curve in the opposite direction, creating an almost wave like transition.

Assignment 1 : The Bowl

Image
Process /  The process of creating the bowl started out with cutting out a pre-drawn circle template from a sheet of aluminium, from there markings were made within the circle, providing guide points on where to shape the aluminium. The shaping was initiated with the use of a mallet which would hit the aluminium sheet against either a rounded timber pattern or a sand bag. The latter stages involved using the English Wheel to further shape the bowl and roll out any imperfections.  Completion Completing the bowl involved several passes through the English Wheel which really helped to iron out the bumps across the surface and improve its overall 'roundness'. The edges were sanded down to ensure equal length across the perimeter.
